In Rutherford, William Carlos Williams was Smithsons pediatrician. Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey and early on lived mostly in Rutherford. It forms a 1500-foot long, fifteen-foot wide, counterclockwise coil jutting from the shore of the lake. Robert Smithson (Janu July 20, 1973) was an American artist who used photography in relation to sculpture and land art. Collaborating with artists, writers, thinkers, and institutions Holt/Smithson Foundation realizes exhibitions, publishes books, initiates artist commissions, programs educational events, encourages research, and develops collections globally from its headquarters in New Mexico. Commonly regarded as American sculptor Robert Smithson’s greatest work, Spiral Jetty (1970) is an earthwork built of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks, earth, and water on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake near Rozel Point, Utah. Our ambition is to become the hub of all things Holt and Smithson. Holt/Smithson Foundation was willed into being by Nancy Holt in 2014.

Constructed from 6,650 tons of rock and earth, the spiral continuously changes form as nature, industry, and time take their effect.
